Mindset Shifts and Parent Teacher Home Visits

This report summarizes findings from a study conducted by RTI International examining whether and how PTHV helps to interrupt implicit biases that educators and families may have about each other. The following changes in beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors resulted from participation in PTHV:

  1. Families felt more comfortable interacting with educators and no longer viewed them as distant authority figures.
  2. Families expressed increased confidence in initiating contact with the school.
  3. Educators recognized their previous negative assumptions about families and students.
  4. Educators experienced increased understanding and empathy.
  5. Educators incorporated newfound knowledge about students’ interests and home cultures into classroom practices.
  6. Educators adopted a more empathetic approach to classroom discipline.
  7. Educators increased communication with families

PTHV advances student success and school improvement by leveraging relationships, research, and a national network of partners to advance evidence-based practices in relational home visits within a comprehensive family engagement strategy.
