2021 Annual Home Visit Tallies

Parent Teacher Home Visits Are Flourishing Despite the Pandemic

During the 2020-21 school year, educators from 525 school sites across the country conducted 26,507 Parent Teacher Home Visits. What’s more, we’re thrilled to announce we trained a record-setting 8,234 teachers in the PTHV model of home visits. Our national network spans 28 states, as well as Washington, DC. Each year we release figures from our annual network census, tallying the growth and scale of our model of home visiting nationwide. We know the total number of home visits represents an expected and understandable decrease from the previous year. However, we couldn’t be more proud because these numbers also represent the continued commitment by educators and schools to build a relationship of trust and a sense of belonging with families, especially during these challenging times.

And despite the disruption to schools, we experienced incredible growth in the number of virtual visits that took place. In fact, 56 percent of all visits last year took place using our virtual home visit model. And the growth in virtual visits surged a whopping 539 percent over the 2019-20 school year.

Adding to the historic growth is the number of teachers who were trained. As the pandemic shuttered schools, education leaders nationwide began a renewed search for evidence-based strategies that help connect home and family so that learning could continue. Parent Teacher Home Visits became a facilitator of choice for more new school districts in the process.

Today’s schools have a much more profound understanding of the critical role that families play in education. And yet we also know that families are always essential partners, whether it’s in a crisis or not. We also conduct this annual tally so that we can celebrate the educators and families who are committed to build relationships of trust with one another.

And we also want to highlight the bold leadership of unions, school administrators, superintendents, district staff, community organizations, policymakers, and others who enable this practice. We see you all of you and we applaud your remarkable results.
